In this month's #BoardTalk, we caught up with logistics expert Garcia Newell, director of business development Europe at DSV Solutions, to talk about the #EventsIndustry, his ambitions for ESSA and the benefits of being part of a collective.
What inspired you to work in the events industry?
I actually fell into the industry; I had no idea that such an industry existed. I started in freight forwarding in 1989 and in 1992 came across a position at an event logistics specialist… and the rest is history. During this time, I have been involved with a numerous industry groups including the AEO’s contractor working group, board member of ESSA’s predecessor AEC (Association of Exhibition Contractors), ESSA’s Diversity & Inclusion working group and many more.
Why did you want to be an ESSA board member?
Over the years, my main goal has always been to raise the profile of the contractor within our industry. I spend a lot of time speaking with our various logistics companies about ESSA, which includes recommending they join the association. Being a member of the board enables me to contribute and discuss the future of our contractor industry and help create greater awareness of services and suppliers and our importance to the exhibitions industry.
What do you consider as ESSA’s greatest strength and why should people join?
Our members are - and should always be - ESSA’s greatest strength.
What is your vision for ESSA in the future?
To increase our membership because strength in numbers means we have a stronger collective voice and to raise the exposure of contractors within our industry.
What advice would you give to those considering a career in the events industry?
Due to the multifaceted nature of business, no day is ever the same or mundane; there is also a very large choice of contractor service providers to choose from.
Why should people join ESSA?
Safety in numbers and support from a great association.
What do you most enjoy doing when you are away from work?
Playing music; I DJ in my private time 😊
